Stand up for
Diversity
Create a large poster that says “Standing Up For Diversity”. Take your time
making the poster visually appealing. Next, place the poster on the
ground, face up and in the middle of the campus. Then, invite students to
come and sign the poster and write brief messages that celebrates diversity.
Once you have gathered all of your signatures, display the poster
in a
prominent place on campus. Invite your local newspapers in to take
photographs of your poster. The community loves to see school-based
diversity building projects.
Inclusion
Activities
High Schools are comprised of a
students of varying needs and backgrounds. Oftentimes,
activities are designed to service your mainstream
student population. In an attempt to provide meaningful
activities for all students, student leadership programs
can do the following:
1. Create a dance for student with
severe disabilities. For example, Alemany High School
sponsors a Halloween Dance for students who are mentally
challenged. This dance is a huge success. The leadership
work with these students in planning the dance. And the
leadership students attend the dance and have a great
time. Students with disabilities should be encourage and
asked to partake in all of the activities your school
offers.
2. Create a communication committee
for students whom English is a second language. This can
simply mean reading the daily announcements in the
student's native language. Many of the English as a
second language students do not participate in school
activities simply because they were not aware that the
activity was taking place.
3. Create a Teen-Buddy Club, where
leadership students can go into classrooms once a week
and work with students with disabilities. This simple
interaction can make the high school experience more
enjoyable for all involved.
