PUBLICITY
You can spend countless hours working to
put on a great activity, but if you don’t publicize it then you are limiting
your success. Listed below are some publicity suggestions:
Build Interest Campaign
By:
Orange Lutheran High School / ASB
Director
Tim Odle
The whole idea is to place your posters up over a few
days - the first phase is to gather interest - wait a few days and then add
more information - wait a few more days and then complete the poster with
all of the information! It is good to start the first phase with a question
and the poster in black and white, move on with the date and a teaser of the
event in color and phase three is graphics and final details to complete the
poster - the anticipation and curiousity of the poster/event grows and the
students became very eager for the information and the event!
Meaningful Posters
Make top quality
posters that students will look at. Use overheads to make detailed posters.
The better the poster, the longer it will stay up and be valued by the
student body.
Whiteboard Campaign
Have all of your ASB students write down
activities on the whiteboards of all the classrooms in
the school. Students want something to look at when they are bored.
Sidewalk Chalk
Most people do walk with
their eyes facing the ground, so publicize your event with sidewalk chalk to
catch their attention.
E-mail
Start an email database. Many
schools provide students with email accounts. Email your activities to
students.
"I Know" Stickers
By:
Redwood High
School / ASB Director Nick
Miller
Print up sheets of address
labels with the words "I Know" on them. Stick them on random kids and tell
them that when someone asks them what they know, they need to say that they
know that the dance is tonight, or that whatever you are trying to publicize
is happening. It works pretty good and gets kids talking. I usually have
kids come to the ASB room asking for a sticker when I do this.
Voice Message
Many schools have
automated phone messages. Use this medium as a way to communicate events to
both students and parents. If your school does not have this system, push to
get one because it is a great way to communicate quickly and
effectively with students and their parents.
Greeters
Have ASB students stand at the
gates of the school to welcome and remind students of the day’s activities.
Daily Bulletin
Be sure to get your
information in on time for the daily bulletin.
All Calls
You can use the school’s PA to
communicate information that needs to get out right away.
