Microphone
Skills Leadership Activity
Leadership students need to learn proper announcement
and microphone skills.
1. Microphone placement: The microphone should be close
to the speaker’s mouth, but not inside of it.
2. Project Voice: The speaker still needs to project
their voice even though it is being amplified by the
microphone.
3. Slow down the pace: It is quite common to speed up
speech patterns when on a microphone. Slow down the
speed in which you are talking.
4. Be prepared: Practice what you are going to say ahead
of time with the microphone turned on.
When making an announcement on a microphone follow a
simple outline like the one listed below:
Who?
What?
When?
Where?
Why?
If you follow the aforementioned outlined, you will
relay all of the pertinent information in a clear and
concise manner. In addition, following this outline
allows your announcements to be brief and to the point.
Exercise: Have your students create some brief
announcements following the who-what-why-when-where
format ( rally, dance, brunch activity, blood drive,
etc… ). Once they have written their announcement, take
them into the gym and have them read their announcement
to the class using a microphone. After each
announcement, allow the class to analyze how well each
student did.
