Goal Setting
Leadership Activity
There is a strong correlation between success and
setting goals. Ask successful people, no matter the
industry in which they are involved, and they will all
share one common characteristic, they set goals. Even
more importantly their goals are generally aligned with
their overall vision of success. Goal setting serves as
a road map for the final destination.
There are a number of things to consider when creating a
goal:
1. The goal is realistic and attainable.
2. The goal has a specific benchmark date
3. The goal has measurable units
4. The goal is clear and understandable
5. The goal has a benefit
6. The goal is meaningful to those involved.
7. The goal is flexible and can be modified as new
challenges occur
8. The goal is the team’s goal
When setting goals as a team it is important to allot
time for initial brainstorming. During the brainstorming
process, you are looking for as much input from team
members as possible. This is not the time to judge
ideas, instead it is time to simply record as many ideas
as possible. It is also important to allow team members
time to piggy back off one another’ s ideas.
Even with all the research that stresses the importance
of goal setting, still many people don’t use it as a
life tool. People don’t goal set for a variety of
reasons: afraid of changing a routine, fear of failure,
fear of the unknown, or they simply do not know how to
set goals in the first place.
Set aside time in the day to set goals. Write these
goals down. A goal written down is more likely to be
accomplished. Go back and review your goals every once
in awhile. If you are not reaching pre-set goals, think
about going back and restructuring your goal.
