How to
Structure a Leadership Class
Structuring your leadership class can be a challenge. There are
times during the year where it seems that there isn't
enough class time to get everything done, and there are
slower times your class needs to filled with meaningful educational experiences.
Listed below are some ideas to help assist you with your
classroom;
1. Hold weekly formal meetings.
2. Cover a section of John Maxwell’s leadership texts.
3. Assign students to work in committees (student recognition,
intramural, ambassadors, publicity, rally, dance,
spirit, etc).
4. Evaluate activities.
5. Brainstorm new activities.
6. Conduct team building exercises.
7. Provide leadership instruction.
8. Discuss current event issues.
10. Have students do impromptu speeches.
11. Invite guest speakers into the classroom.
12. Have the students write thank you letters to people
who donate funds or time to your school.
13. Allow students time to reorganize the classroom.
14. Facilitate open discussions.
15. Revisit class and personal goals.
Being an ASB director is a lot like being a coach. You
have to plan out the period and go into each class
period with an agenda and overall goal in mind. You also
have to be open to productive noise. A good
leadership program
can appear noisy and chaotic to an outsider. A
leadership class can have ten different
things going on all at once. Our job is to make sure the
students are keeping on task and staying productive.
Please share with asbdirector.com your class routine. You may be
doing something that can make our jobs easier or more
productive.
