Homecoming Dance & Spirit Week Themes

Deciding on a great homecoming theme idea is your first, and one of the most challenging decisions when planning your homecoming / spirit week events. Believe it or not, most homecoming dance and spirit week themes are chosen during the summer. The student government should meet and discuss possible themes for homecoming. Make sure to allow time for a lot of discussion because very rarely will there be total consensus on the themes proposed by the class. It is important to try to involve as many students as possible. Once you have narrowed down your themes to two or three, put it to a class vote. In case of a tie, let the seniors decide. A great theme will give your students a lot of room for creativity when planning the festivities. Make sure to choose a theme that can easily be incorporated throughout the spirit week, along with the homecoming rally, homecoming game, dance, and floats.

Assign Class Homecoming Themes:

Once you have chosen the theme for your homecoming, it is important that each class chooses a float idea that reflects the overall theme. For example, if the homecoming theme is TV Land, the seniors may choose “Giligan’s Island," the juniors may choose “The Munsters," the sophomores may choose “Happy Days,” and the freshmen may choose “I Love Lucy.” Generally, it is smart to let the seniors have first shot at the float theme they wish to have. Once the class has chosen their float theme, then all activities during Spirit Week should pertain to their particular class homecoming theme.

Homecoming Themes & Performance Groups:

Homecoming themes are also a great way to promote school spirit by involving your different performance groups such as dance team, cheer, band, etc. During your homecoming rally, or football game festivities you can have your performance groups perform to a skit pertaining to your theme. For example, if you choose "Decades" for your homecoming theme the dance team can dance and dress to a song pertaining to one decade, following by the cheer team, who can perform to another song from another decade. This is another way to keep your homecoming theme flowing.

Homecoming Themes and School Television:

During your homecoming & spirit week, you can involve your school television network to promote your theme. They can be a great resource to market the weeks activities to the student body. They can help promote the theme by having anchors dress up and by decorating the television set.
