Black Light Pep Rally Ideas:
Once
your principal gets over the initial shock of ASB
wanting to turn out all the lights in the gym so they
can have a black light rally, explain to them that you
have it all under control. Listed below are some
suggestions for having an extra cool black light rally:
1)
Proper black light lighting is imperative. I have
seen rallies that use the black light floor lamps that
you can purchase at any party store, but they do not
usually answer the call. I suggest contacting a
professional DJ service that will come out and set up
industry caliber lights for you.
2)
Glow in the dark paints: Your students will spend
a tremendous amount of time decorating posters with
black light paints. In truth, only a few paints will
show up clearly under the black lights. I have found
neon green and yellow to work the best. Actually,
fluorescent yellow/green highlighter pens show up the
best. You can buy the extra wide markers at any home
office store.
3)
What should your performers wear? This is a black
light rally so, obviously,
darker colored clothes do not
show up well. Performers should stick to white or bright
clothes and should highlight parts of their costumes
for an added effect.
4)
Listed below are some cool activities
that can be
done at a black light rally:
a)
Flag Team-The flag team purchases clear plastic
poles. Fill the inside of these plastic poles with glow
in the dark necklaces/tubes. It makes for an exciting
visual show, and the students love it. Their flags
should be white with bright neon strips.
b)
Drum-line- Put your whole drum team in white
paper paint suits (Hardware Stores), and have them graffiti
their suits with neon paints. Then have them tape their
drumsticks with white athletic tape and color them with
a highlighter marker. They should do the same with
their drums, as well. For their finale, have them bang
on glow in the dark painted trash cans. Place the
trashcan upside down. Fill the bottom of the trashcan
with water based glow in the dark paint (over a tarp).
When they hit the trash can the neon colored paint /
water will fly through the air. I usually end the rally
with this activity.
c)
Glow in the dark slam-dunk contest. Tape the rim
of the basket so that is all that is visible to the
audience. Have your athletes wear glow in the dark
costumes. You must use either a glow in the dark ball,
or a basketball that has been wrapped in athletic tape
with neon high lighter marks all over it.
d)
Squirt gun relay- fill squirt guns with water and
water dye. The participants squirt their partner in the
mouth. The person being squirted must fill up a clear
container on the table next to them.
Make
sure you rally is well supervised with willing teachers
sitting in the stands.
Try
to keep the black light rally a secret because it makes
for a nice surprise, and it does not give students the
opportunity to think of malicious things to do to thwart
your fun.
Tips From Our Forum:
By: Ron

The first black-light rally I ever did actually only
consisted of six or seven minutes of actual black-light
content, right at the end of a traditional pep rally.
The lights were turned out two-thirds of the way into
the rally to reveal the black lights. Not only did it
create a cool effect, but administrators could rest
easier knowing that the rally would be over soon if
there were a problem.
We had the cheerleaders in glow outfits, the dance team
with white gloves and shoes (a cool effect) and the
grand finale was breakdancers with flourescent tape on
their shirts and pants. Way cool! It was short and
sweet, transitions were super-fast, and we just told
kids in advance that if they wanted us to do cool
black-light rallies like this in the future, that they
had to be on their best behavior for this first one.
It's really just like having a successful rally in
regular light. If there are poor transitions, lots of
downtime, kids will get restless and misbehave. If you
have your rally packed with cool stuff, and transition
quickly, music going the whole time, kids will stay
engaged and not take advantage of the darkness.
