Beach Volleyball Activity

By: Alice C. Stelle Middle School / ASB Director Todd Schroeder

Buy a cheap volleyball net at any sporting goods store, or store with summer toys out. Create a volleyball court, any size you wish, by using yellow caution tape, purchased at Home Depot. Choose contestants several different ways. (ie: teachers vs. students by grade level.) I send a note to homeroom teachers asking them to explain the game to a student who is not an "A" student, may be quiet, is not involved in other things on campus. Explain the game is beachball volleyball..you can hit it as many times as you like, no pressure, and you're playing against teachers, not other students. Ask teachers from each grade to play also. If you only have 2 teachers, it's 2 teachers vs however many students you have from that grade level. Any size beach ball will do. (Note: a windy day is not necessarily the best time to play this, but it can also ad an interesting twist to the game.) The game is short, usually 5 to 10 points, rally scoring. Each side my hit the volleyball as many times as it takes to get it over the net. There is no spiking. Advertise it as a class spirit day. Teachers vs the students. I've even had disabled teachers play, or be line judges. There are many creative variations you can run off of this idea.
